Grit and Lime: A Chairman's walk:
It's time to get inspired for a new era of club adventures and what better way than in the company of fellow club members whilst exploring the Limestone and Gritstone landscape in the wonderful Peak District. To make up for the delay in the Chairman's walk we're taking on a route which give you a real variety of terrain and scenery, including climbable rock for those who are up for a quick solo en-route (time and weather permitting).
You should come prepared for a walk of around 14 miles nearly 3000ft of ascent. Make sure you bring food/drink to keep you going plus suitable clothing and footwear for the conditions (there is likely to be a boggy section). There will be a pub stop en-route and pub at the end, but there is no requirement to go into the pub for those (like me) who are being cautious.
If you don't fancy the full route there is the option to one or other half of the route by joining/leaving at the midway refreshment stop. There is also a family friendly easy option. More details on these alternatives below.
Start:
We will start (and finish) outside 'The Derwentwater Arms' pub in Calver village. We'll be setting off at 10am sharp, make sure you arrive in good time so you are ready to start walking at this time. Please park sensibly on the road near the pub to avoid blocking up the pub car park.
Finish:
We expect to be back to 'The Derwentwater Arms' pub by 5pm where we can enjoy a drink to celebrate our success. The pub is serving food until 8pm so if you'd like to stay for a meal that is an option but booking ahead is definitely recommended. As mentioned above there is no requirement to stay for for the pub stop or to go inside.
Midway refreshment:
There will be a refreshment stop midway along the route at the The Chequers Inn in Froggatt. We should arrive here around 1pm (assuming we are on track) and will be away again by 2pm. This also allows those doing only one or other half of the walk to leave/join us. Again as mentioned above there is no requirement to go inside the pub, I will certainly be drinking outside.
Grit only (first half of the walk):
If you would like to do just the first half of the Chairman's Walk (the Grit section) then you can join us for the start at 'The Derwentwater Arms'. Then just after we leave the midway refreshment stop at 'The Chequers Inn' you can return directly to Calver village via an easy walk of just over a mile along the River Derwent. Make sure you bring a map or directions to get yourself back to the start.
Lime only (second half of the walk):
If you would like to do just the second half of the Chairman's Walk (the Limestone section) then you can join us at The Chequers Inn ready to leave at 2pm. This would probably work best if you park at the finish point at 'The Derwentwater Arms' in Calver, and then walk up the River Derwent to 'The Chequers Inn' (allow yourself about 45 mins). Alternatively you could park at 'The Chequers Inn' and then walk back up the River Derwent at the end of the walk. Either way, make sure you bring a map or directions to get yourself from 'The Derwentwater Arms' to the 'The Chequers Inn'.
Family friendly version:
Those with little legs might prefer to just do the walk along the River Derwent to 'The Chequers Inn'. This is a mostly flat and pleasant walk with plenty of places to stop and picnic. Starting from 'The Bridge Inn' pub at Calver Bridge gives a walk of about 1.5 miles each way. For an even shorter walk park at the bridge over the River Derwent on the A625 which makes the walk 3/4 of a mile each way. Either way, start your walk in time to make it to 'The Chequers Inn' for 1pm to join us for our midway refreshment.
