Bowline CC - Crossing the Desert of Wales

E-mail sent by Andy Railton, Saturday, 16th January 2021 @ 1:31pm

Hi All,

So we had a good time last night looking over some slides of the Club's trip to cycle the Trans Cambrian Way - a 105 mile off-road route from Knighton to Dovey Junction through the heart of the remotest part of Wales.

I  realise not everyone may not have been able to make the date last night so I have attached the show as a PDF file. I hope it enthuses you to think about doing the route, several Bowline People have done the route since we did in 2009 and everyone agrees it is a great but challenging trip. I've added a link to a website where there's a good PDF guide with GPX files for the the route.

Enjoy the show

Bowline CC - Xmas Quiz & Answers

E-mail sent by Andy Railton, Saturday, 16th January 2021 @ 11:58am

Hi All,

I forgot to send this out to those who couldn't make the Xmas quiz. Anyway attached is the Xmas quiz and the answers, on separate files. The score to beat is approx 21, PP says he won on the night, so can you beat PP and be the brainiest bowliner? It's a departure from my usual qizz, it's got a bit of general knowledge, plus Christmassy stuff and climbing stuff. I thought it was a bit easier than my normal quizzes, but apparently no it was equally fiendish.

Bowline CC - What I did on my Holidays

E-mail sent by Andy Railton, Friday, 8th January 2021 @ 4:23pm

Hi All,

In addition to the talks the club is running we are going to have a few nights (on a Friday) when you can have the opportunity to talk about a trip that particularly stuck in your mind. The trip should of course be about an outdoor activity; climbing, mountaineering, MTBing, skiing, sailing etc. There's no rules about the length of trip; as long as you think it will be of interest. It's very much intended to be very lighthearted with the view of getting us together as a club

There will be 3 dates initially; 15th January, 5th Feb and 12th March.

I'll kick off the first "Trip" entitled "Crossing the Desert of Wales". This about the Club's trip a few years ago to cycle the Trans Cambrian way.

If you fancy talking about your trip on the two other dates, give me a ring and I'll book you in.

Bowline CC - Club news (Thursday 7th January)

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Thursday, 7th January 2021 @ 8:51pm

Hi All,

Another year and another lockdown which means that all club meets are cancelled (apart from virtual ones) and the club hut is not available to be used until further notice. Sadly this means that we are cancelling the Chairman's Walk for now and will set a new date in the future.

However all is not lost as we have the next of our winter talks coming up on Wednesday 27th January at 8pm. Join Suzie Imber for a discussion of upcoming space missions and evolving technologies in the space industry, the hazards and challenges of operating in space, and how looking back down at our planet can help us to address the most pressing scientific, societal and humanitarian challenges of our time. We'll email the Zoom link out to club members nearer the time.

And on Wednesday 10th February we will have a talk from Dave Unwin on the Maps of Britains mountains. More details to follow soon.

Finally, just before Christmas I received an email from Michael Wright who's father and uncle where in the club in the 1970s. Michael can recall at a young age spending time at the Bowline club hut, for Easter and other weekends although the hut wasnt the luxury it is today. Michael sent us some pictures from his father's photo collection showing the hut being worked on in the 1970s, thanks Michael:

That's it for this week. Take care everyone and stay safe,

Bowline CC - Club news (Sunday 20th December)

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Sunday, 20th December 2020 @ 9:30pm

Hi All,

A big thanks to Masa for giving the first of our winter talks on Wednesday evening. We had a good attendance and discussion/questions after the talk. If you missed it then fear not as I took a recording and can share a link for you to download, get in touch with me if you want the link. The next of our winter talks will be 'Stepping back: Remote sensing from space' by Suzie on Wednesday 27th January (evening), more details to follow.

Our club bouldering competition is underway albeit with a different format this year as we can't gather together. We will be having several rounds, the first of which is at Social Climbing in Leicester until the 31st December. Those nice people at Social Climbing have offered discount entry for club members up until Christmas. Best get your attempts in whilst you can in case we got locked down again and the indoor walls have to close. Full details of the competition on the club website.

As an extra present for you this Christmas our Quiz Master (Andy Railton) is putting together a fun festive Christmas Quiz. The Quiz will take place this Monday evening at 8pm via Zoom. See the Zoom details in the email from Andy, hope to see you all there!

Merry Christmas to you all!
